In 1832, South Carolina thought that their rights should come before the rights of the Country. This is basically saying that the central government should be less powerful than the regional governments. This was the start of secession, when the South Carolinians were thinking about themselves differently than they thought about the government. This was a type of sectionalism. To protest the government, South Carolina refused to pay taxes to the government. This was called the Nullification Crisis, because a state was nullifying a tax law. Andrew Jackson was furious, and decided to immediately send federal troops to South Carolina. Because of this, war almost broke out, and it was chaos. Eventually, South Carolina and Andrew Jackson/the Federal Government came to an agreement. It was in the form of a compromise, and there was temporary peace.
Arkansas believed in State's Rights, and used propaganda and political cartoons to advertise.
